In addition to the Lord Jesus, I have had many heroes in my life: Superman (“faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound . . .”), Captain Kangaroo, Abraham Lincoln, John Wayne, and my dad. That’s just the short list.
My dad was a great guy. He modeled a lot of very important principles in his life. Among them were honesty, hard work, respect for family and respect for the principles upon which our country is based. He sometimes talked about those things, but mostly he lived them before me and my sister.
Every month we have a men’s breakfast - the Ironman’s Breakfast. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” We sponsor this breakfast to provide our men with an opportunity to be encouraged and “sharpened” as men of God. Around Father’s Day each June, we celebrate the Father/Son relationship and rub shoulders with real world heroes.
My dad won’t be able to make it to the Father/Son breakfast this year, but I’m hoping my sons-in-law and grandsons will be able to join us on Saturday, June 14. I hope all our men can attend. Pastor Caines will be our speaker. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t able to bring your son, father, grandfather or whomever. Men of all ages are invited for great fellowship, food, discussion and prayer.
Some of the heroes in the faith that I admire serve in the body at CPC. There are many wonderful people who serve here, but I want to mention just a couple of them to illustrate the servant attitude that makes them heroes in anyone’s book.
Donna Schreiner and Jon Arbuckle have both told me repeatedly that teaching the children in our Sunday School program is the “highlight of their week.” They frequently testify that ministering to the children is not a burden, but they consider it a privilege and blessing.
Superman modeled lots of positive attributes, but he doesn’t hold a candle to Donna or Jon. These folks have a power that Superman didn’t know. And they don’t need to duck into a phone booth to begin to model their godly attributes.
Hopefully other faithful servants won’t be offended by my only listing Donna and Jon. They are examples to illustrate the many who serve faithfully in the ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
You too can be a hero in our church family. We always need volunteers for the nursery program. We can use greeters at our Welcome Center on Sunday mornings. Mission: Chattanooga began last week. There are many opportunities to serve with the youth and children of our church. What is your gift? What is your passion?
As Administrator and Director of Christian Education I’m here to serve you in any way I can. One way may be to help you find an area of ministry here in which you can serve the Lord in the body of Christ. So, if you’d like to join the ranks of CPC heroes, just let me know, and I’ll do my best to help you find where your gifts and passion can be best utilized . . . just step into the phone booth over here . . .
