Biographical Sketch

John was born to missionary parents in Recife, Brazil. He attended high school and some college in Tennessee before serving in the US Army. Susan came to faith in Christ in Kingsport, TN, where she grew up. She graduated from King College in 1972 and taught Latin and English for several years. John and Susan met while ministering to military personnel at Fort Bragg.

After they married, the Shanes lived in Raleigh, NC, where John completed his BS in forestry. They attended Columbia International University where John earned an MDiv and MS in Bible with special emphasis in missions, and Susan completed the certificate program. Through this training and missions exposure, the Lord led them to pursue missionary service.

The Shanes have one son, Nat, a graphic artist in Greenville, SC, and one daughter, Lindsay, who is currently a student at Furman University.
