Bruce and Barbara Wannemacher live in Cape Town, South Africa

    Bruce and Barbara have been with MTW in Cape Town, South Africa for the past year. Their teenage daughter, Beth, is still at home and attends a local South African school. 

    Bruce teaches in the Bible Institute of South Africa. The school has students from all over the continent of Africa, as well as a few from Europe. 

    The institute is training pastors and bible translators to work in their native tribal language. He is also involved in teaching weekly in the local black township of Gugulethu, a town of about 300,000 from the Xhosa tribe. This mainly involves the training of local pastors. Another aspect of Bruce's work is writing and editing study materials for the Distance Learning Program correspondence school.

    Barbara is active in a nearby black township of Masaphumulele, where she presents the gospel to the elementary school children. She also leads a weekly bible study with Bible Institute women (staff, students, and student wives).

Biographical Sketch

Bruce and Barbara grew up in neighboring towns in northern Illinois and met in elementary school. They both became Christians through a campus ministry at college and married before their senior year. After graduation Bruce attended graduate school, earning a Masters degree. Bruce is retired from the US military, where he served as a Medical Service Corps officer managing Army hospital laboratories and blood banks. After leaving the military he attended seminary in order to prepare for full time missions service with MTW. 

    Desiring to serve in cross-cultural missions, Bruce  and Barbara pursued Bible training at Covenant Theological Seminary in 1993. They both graduated in 1998 - Bruce with an M. Div. and Barbara with an M A. in General Theological Studies. During their seminary years, God confirmed their desire to serve cross-culturally through short-term ministry opportunities in England, Jordan, and Africa.

    Bruce and Barbara initially served with the Africa Theological Training Resource Team (ATTRT) based in Nairobi, Kenya. Their goal was to provide Reformed theological teaching and training for national leaders and pastors throughout Africa.
